How the Yu-Gi-Oh! Battle Phase works: direct attacks, attack against attack, attack against defense, damage calculation and the steps of battle.

During the Battle Phase, each of your monsters in Attack Position can attack once. You choose which monster attacks and which of your opponent's monsters it targets; if they have none, you attack directly.

Direct attack

If your opponent controls no monsters, your monster attacks them directly and takes away as many Life Points as its ATK. A 2500 ATK monster deals 2500.

Attacking a monster in Attack Position

Compare both monsters' ATK:

ResultWhat happens
Your ATK is higherYour opponent's monster is destroyed and they lose the difference in Life Points.
Your ATK is lowerYour monster is destroyed and you lose the difference.
TieBoth are destroyed and nobody loses Life Points.

Example: Summoned Skull (2500 ATK) attacks Gaia The Fierce Knight (2300 ATK). Gaia is destroyed and its owner loses 200.

Attacking a monster in Defense Position

Now compare your ATK with its DEF:

ResultWhat happens
Your ATK is higher than its DEFThe defending monster is destroyed, but its owner loses no Life Points.
Your ATK is lower than its DEFNothing is destroyed and you lose the difference.
TieNothing happens.

If the monster you attack is face-down, it's flipped face-up before damage is calculated; if it has a Flip effect, it activates.

The steps of an attack

What's above is enough for most games, but it helps to know each attack goes through several steps, because many cards say "during the Damage Step" or "when a monster declares an attack":

  1. Start Step: the Battle Phase begins.
  2. Battle Step: you declare an attack. Traps that respond to attacks, like Mirror Force, are usually activated here.
  3. Damage Step: the defending monster is flipped face-up if needed, damage is calculated and monsters are destroyed. Only some cards can be activated in this step (those that change ATK or DEF, among others), so many won't work here.
  4. You go back to the Battle Step to attack with another monster, or move to the End Step to finish the Battle Phase.

Common points of confusion

  • Each monster attacks once per turn, unless its effect says otherwise.
  • Defense Position monsters don't attack.
  • The player taking the Duel's first turn can't attack.
  • If the monster you were attacking disappears before the attack, you can pick another target or not attack. If your opponent is left with no monsters, you can attack directly.
  • ATK and DEF can change through effects. Damage is calculated with the values at that moment.

To see how effects respond to each other, carry on with Chains and Spell Speed.
