El turno, fase a faseThe turn, phase by phase

Qué se puede hacer en cada fase del turno de Yu-Gi-Oh!: Draw Phase, Standby Phase, Main Phase 1, Battle Phase, Main Phase 2 y End Phase. What you can do in each phase of a Yu-Gi-Oh! turn: Draw Phase, Standby Phase, Main Phase 1, Battle Phase, Main Phase 2 and End Phase.

Main Phase 1Invocas, colocas cartas y usas efectos.

Players take turns: you play a full turn, then your opponent plays theirs, and so on until someone wins. Every turn is split into six phases, always in the same order.

PhaseWhat happens
Draw PhaseYou draw 1 card.
Standby PhaseEffects that say "during the Standby Phase" happen.
Main Phase 1You summon, set cards and use effects. Most of the game happens here.
Battle PhaseYou attack with your monsters. Optional.
Main Phase 2Same as Main Phase 1, after attacking.
End PhaseEffects that say "during the End Phase" happen and the turn ends.

Draw Phase

You draw 1 card from your Deck. It's mandatory. Remember: the player who starts the Duel does not draw on their first turn.

Even this early, your opponent can already respond with fast cards (Traps or Quick Effects). That's true in every phase.

Standby Phase

Usually nothing happens here unless a card says so: some cards have a maintenance cost paid here, or effects that trigger right now.

Main Phase 1

This is where most of the game happens. During your Main Phase you can do all of this, in any order and as many times as your cards allow:

  • Normal Summon or Set a monster, but only once per turn.
  • Special Summon as many monsters as your cards let you. There's no limit.
  • Change the battle position of your monsters (Attack to Defense or back), once per monster per turn. You can't do it on the turn you summoned it, or after it has attacked.
  • Activate Spell Cards from your hand or field.
  • Set Spell and Trap Cards face-down in your zones.
  • Activate effects of your monsters and other cards.

Summoning covers every way to bring monsters out.

Battle Phase

If you want to attack, you enter the Battle Phase. Each of your monsters in Attack Position can attack once. If your opponent has no monsters, you can attack directly, hitting their Life Points.

Attacking is optional: you can skip the whole Battle Phase. And the player taking the first turn of the Duel can't enter it.

Battle explains everything that happens during an attack and how damage is calculated.

Main Phase 2

Another Main Phase, with the same rules as the first. It's for whatever you didn't want to do before attacking, like setting Traps or summoning defensive monsters. If you already used your Normal Summon in Main Phase 1, you don't get another one.

End Phase

The turn ends. Effects that say "during the End Phase" are applied and, if you have more than 6 cards in hand, you discard down to 6. Then your opponent's turn begins.
