"Mi carta busca a otra".

  • YCS, Regional, Nacional: torneos grandes oficiales.

The community uses a lot of slang. These are the words you'll hear most.

About cards

  • Archetype: a family of cards sharing a name and supporting each other, like "Blue-Eyes" or "Sky Striker". Almost every deck is built around one.
  • Staple: a generic card that fits almost any deck because it's good on its own. Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring and Called by the Grave are staples.
  • Hand trap: a monster activated from the hand on your opponent's turn, usually to stop them. Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, Effect Veiler, Maxx "C" or Nibiru, the Primal Being.
  • Tech: a card you include for a specific matchup rather than because it's generally good.
  • Engine: a group of cards from one archetype added into another deck to use their effects.
  • Floodgate: a card that stops both players from doing something for a long time, like "neither player can Special Summon".
  • Boss monster: a deck's strongest monster, the one your combos aim for.

About playing

  • OPT (once per turn). A HOPT (hard once per turn) is the one that says "you can only use this effect of [name] once per turn", which covers every copy.
  • Going first / second: modern decks usually prefer going first to set up a board with interruptions; others are built to go second and break it.
  • Board: what you leave on the field at the end of your turn to stop your opponent.
  • Interruption: an effect you use on your opponent's turn to stop what they're doing. A good board has several.
  • Negate: cancel a card or an effect.
  • Starter: a card that starts your combo by itself.
  • Extender: a card that lets you keep going even if part of your combo was stopped.
  • Combo: a sequence of summons and effects in one turn to reach your best monsters.
  • Brick: a hand you can't do anything with.
  • Grind: a long game won by whoever holds out with more resources.
  • OTK (one turn kill): winning in a single turn by dealing all 8000 LP at once. FTK (first turn kill): winning on the first turn.
  • Search: adding a card from your Deck to your hand. "My card searches another".
  • Mill: sending cards from the Deck to the Graveyard; many decks use it to trigger Graveyard effects.
  • Pop: destroy a card. Bounce: return it to the hand. Spin: shuffle it into the Deck.

About tournaments and community

  • Locals: small tournaments at your store. OTS are Official Tournament Stores.
